Scope of graphic designers

There is an opinion that web design is far from the polygraph, which is revered for the highest professional aerobatics. However, the websites of masters are strikingly different from the homepages of ordinary users (the pro-creators themselves are contemptuously called “hamster” (from the home page), and their work is “hamster”).

For sites to be not just a collection of texts and photographs, but a real work of design art, it is necessary to study special programming languages such as Perl, JavaScript, php, etc., to be able to work with Photoshop, understand text encodings, know markup languages (HTML and XML), as well as methods for representing graphics (vector and raster formats).

For designing a site or a book, the designer uses photos, texts, graphics, made by others. It is this division of labor that allows you to achieve a better result: work is carried out with high quality material. The designer should not be a photographer or author of texts. The designer does not even have to deal with the HTML or computer layout in detail. Another thing is that in the time of computer-aided design, it’s unthinkable to design without knowledge of such a multifunctional tool like a computer. To create something with your computer, you need to know how it is created. Especially since modern computer programs provide a huge number of new features, without knowing which one can not “design at the level”, create a product that can compete with the best samples.

Naturally, the level of computer literacy of a designer far exceeds the level of a typical user. The designer is an artist. But between the career of the artist and the computer scientist there is a tangible link: the design decisions relating to printed materials, advertising products, web are created with the help of certain software.

To create a full-fledged site, the designer should collaborate with the programmer, especially when creating a complex multi-level portal with a large number of interactive features. However, a medium-static site may well be done by a single designer without resorting to a programmer or webmaster.

The ideal chain (“creator-designer-layout designer”) is practically not encountered in life, and often all three functions are performed by one person, with higher education in art, a dock in the computer and the Internet, who knows many graphic programs and presents original ideas on the mountain. This universalist imagines what the magazine will look like, what means will be controlled by a new web page, which kind of advertising will fit the firm selling electric kettles.

In the West, customers are turning to design bureaus. If the company is large, then it has a design department itself, from where the projects go to the department of preparation (in the print prepress, in the web – layout and programming). For a person who combines the positions of a designer and a layout designer (more precisely, a layout designer who sometimes performs the work of a designer), they have a special name DeskTopPublisher.

Where are you going from?
One can almost say with certainty that in the profession of a graphic designer, as in any other, it is not even a desire – a constant passionate striving for the embodiment of his ideas.

Much in this profession is learned experimentally, in working order. It is necessary to draw such a button on the site – I’ll try, but I’ll do it. Therefore, designers often cease to learn in the classical sense rather quickly (walk, suppose, in a technical school or college) – training takes place daily, under the conditions of a new task. It is believed that you can become a designer, even without learning all this, just every day, many years in a row doing this craft-art (and such examples are known), working hard and methodically analyzing others’ works.

However, designers with vast experience and lack of specialized education are only in our country. Under normal conditions, graphic designers need higher art education and knowledge of technical support (for example, if you work in printing, you need to know the fine details of printing processes).

Elementary knowledge of various graphic programs can be obtained in short-term courses. However, the courses will only help to fill the hole, but the thorough knowledge is to be obtained at the university.

What do they eat?
Where to apply to the newly-created (or highly experienced) graphic designer? He will take pleasure in any publishing house or editorial staff (media or book), which is self-employed in prepress materials preparation (prepress), advertising agency (outdoor advertising, production of advertising modules). In large firms, at first sight unrelated to design, they are aware of the value of such employees and organize the appropriate departments to publish beautiful catalogs of their products, design packaging, labels, and engage in advertising. And of course, graphic designers are always required to create and support multi-level portals (, ya
