Myths about psychologists

Moreover, any phenomenon that acquires such an extent often loses its depth. After reading the popular books like “Psychoanalysis in comics”, many, for example, newly-arrived psychophysical students are very surprised that everything is much more complicated and that psychology, in general, is science, and far from being as simple as it seems.

A psychologist is also not exactly what shows in films, especially American ones. In an article published on, a number of myths about psychologists existing in society have been scattered.

1. The psychologist is dealing with “abnormal” people in one way or another. A normal, healthy person will not go to a psychologist. One of the most popular myths.
First of all, the psychologist by definition deals with healthy people who have some difficulties or problems. With psychic deviations is a doctor, a psychiatrist. This is a medical specialization. A psychologist does not have medical education and even does not have the right to treat.

As for the division of the psychologist and psychotherapist, it is not so obvious. However, it can be said that the therapist deals with more complex cases, deep psychological trauma, personal problems. Psychotherapy involves more profound and long-term work, during which the internal world of the client can change considerably.

A psychologist is more likely to advise, deal with special cases, give advice (for example, a psychologist with a client may develop a list of techniques that help to relax or, conversely, focus, etc.). However, in our country, this separation is rather conditional. Yes, and work started as a counseling can turn into a serious and long-lasting psychotherapy.

2. “Psychoanalyser” and “psychologist” are one and the same. The myth originates from foreign films.
In fact, these words are NOT synonymous. Psychoanalysis is just one of the directions in psychology with its principles and specifics of work. It is the work of the psychoanalyst you watch when you see how a person lays on a couch and begins to talk about himself. By the way, the couch is traditionally considered an attribute of psychoanalysis, but modern psychoanalysts are far from always using it.

In addition to psychoanalysis, there are several other trends (approaches) in psychology, within which psychologists can work: gestal psychology, cognitive psychology, existential psychology, etc. Each approach has its own principles, methods of work, etc.

3. The task of the psychologist – to understand the client’s problem as quickly as possible, to give the right advice, and for this, of course, he must have a great life experience.
To some extent, this also depends on the approach in which the pins work, but it can still be argued that the task of the psychologist is not to give advice. In general, a psychologist should not understand the client’s problem and solve it. He must help the person, create conditions that he himself did – he understood, made a decision.

No one better than the person himself can not know the best solution to his problem, but he has too much trouble finding him. That’s the task of a specialist – to create optimal conditions for the client to work with himself. And this work is not easy.

The perception of the psychologist as a wizard, who solves all the problems, is one of the most persistent myths. Therefore, people still love us so much every kind of psychics and other magicians – for the promise of everything and at once.

As for life experience, then the psychologist does not give advice, he does not have to go through the same situations in the same situation as the client. Even the opposite is more likely to interfere: a psychologist may begin to transfer his or her own problem to the client’s problem. If we talk about experience, then it will probably be useful to have the experience of solving problems, one way or another, as ownership of this mechanism.

4. The psychologist should not have problems, differently what kind of a psychologist and how can he help others ?!
Psychologist is not God. He may have problems. The only thing that is required by a good specialist is to be aware of their problems, keep them under control, in order to track in time if its problems begin to interfere with effective work with the client. For this, a good psychologist must periodically pass personal psychotherapy himself.

5. A good psychologist after a brief conversation is the psychological portrait of the interlocutor.
The task of a psychologist is not to understand the client’s life, but to help him to understand himself in his life. Therefore, he simply does not have such a task – somehow indicate the problem of the client or the type of his personality. Such hanging labels, you can even say, gives out just not the very best expert. Indeed, by itself the attribution of a person to one or another type or definition of a certain level gives little to solve the real problem.

Yes, and do not need to confuse a psychologist with clairvoyant. Often, I hear such requests: you see a man in the first or second time, and he, having learned your profession, asks to tell him about him. In such cases, I usually answer that I am a psychologist and not a psychic.

6. Every person is a psychologist, only some have a diploma, and some do not.
If to count conversations on souls in the kitchen psychological p
