Pharmacist is a pharmacologist
Provisor is translated from Latin as “foreseeing”. At the coffee grounds, the pharmacist, however, does not guess – he works with powders, medicines, pills. And the prediction can only supply the next batch of medicines.
An obstetrician is a specialist who thoroughly understands the medicines, their use, composition and dosages. At present, this is a specialist in the highest category, with pharmacists, consultants and other pharmacy staff working there. A modern pharmacist is a sort of pharmacologist’s manager: in theory, he can engage in the preparation and release of drugs, in fact, as a rule, he directs the process.
Back in the years 15-20, the pharmacist was mainly preparing drugs. Today, specialists with a higher education in pharmacy have a different set of tasks. Despite the fact that most modern pharmacists, as before, work in pharmacies, their responsibilities include not the preparation of drugs, but the release of finished medicines and consultation of buyers.
Large network of pharmacies provided a work of a whole generation of students and graduates of the pharmaceutical faculties. Graduates of higher educational institutions rarely linger behind the “first table” (dispensing of medicines without a prescription) for a long time: higher pharmaceutical education allows to make a fast enough career. Often, after working a year or two on drug holidays, young people are on the rise – becoming deputy heads, and then heads of pharmacies. It is possible to work also at medical institutions: in hospitals and sanatoria. There are also pharmacists-technologists (responsible for industrial production of medicines) and pharmacists-analysts (they carry out quality control and are licensed). In addition, specialists with specialized education find use to their knowledge in the marketing of the pharmacological market, in the field of procurement of imported medicines and their derivatives.
Provizor will be useful:
love for natural and exact sciences. First of all, of course, to chemistry – this discipline will involve both study and subsequent work. Therefore, various “valence-proportions-gram-nmolls” should not cause disgust;
readiness for training. Profession requires constant upgrading of information, improvement of qualification and self-education, or it is impossible to make a career in pharmacology.
physical endurance, often the pharmacist has to spend on his feet all day.
Accuracy. The pharmacy, like any medical institution, requires purity and order. This is especially true during the period of epidemics, when employees almost every minute are subjected to attacks of microbes and viruses of all kinds;
communicative and compassionate to people. We need not just listen to the visitor, but also get into his problem to give really useful advice. An experienced pharmacist is partly a doctor who, if necessary, warns the buyer about the possible danger of self-treatment and sends it for consultation at the clinic.
Any pharmacist, regardless of the place of work, should know the pharmacology and chemistry well, be guided in the medicines, their species and groups, the raw material, etc. On the market, it is the matter of the matter, there are drugs of the new generation, analogues of already existing medicines … What kind of pharmacological group is the drug, which components are included in its composition, than it differs from the similar ones, which in him indications, contraindications, side effects – all these subtleties known to the real pro.
If the pharmacist works in a pharmacy or medical institution, his duties include tolerance, courtesy and attentiveness. In this case, on a part-time basis, he performs the functions of a psychologist: it is necessary to work not only with people, but with patients. The percentage of pharmacy visitors buying biologically active supplements or vitamins is small – most have health problems, and their mood is appropriate. Moreover, when ill, nine out of ten do not go to the attending physician for prescription, but go straight to the pharmacy kiosk. Thus, the pharmacist turns into a physician and therapist in the same person: he must “diagnose”, “issue a recipe”, choose the correct dosage, and patiently listen to the grandmother’s complaints about the high cost of aspirin.
If the work of the pharmacist is connected with the promotion of medicines in the market, procurement or logistics, it is necessary to understand the management, marketing and the foundations of the economy. After all, the manager of the pharmacy is, in fact, the manager: the range of his duties is in many respects similar to that of the manager of the store, and the main task is the creation of a competitive business. In this case, such qualities as mobility, ability to think creatively and unconventionally are important. Provizor, who works with foreign partners, will also use the knowledge of a foreign language.
In pharmacology, there is a sharp shortage of staff, so most young professionals begin to work with a student bench. As a rule, the pharmacy kiosk or one of the network pharmacies becomes the first step of a career.
